Both council areas of Northamptonshire saw an identical rise in population, according to the 2021 census. West and North Northamptonshire's populations grew by 13.5% in the 10 years since the last census in 2011.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) conducts the national census every decade to create a resolute image of society. People in England and Wales are asked about themselves and their household to monitor population growth, male-female ratio, and population density.

On the last census day, March 21 this year, the population of North Northants stood at 359,500, an increase of more than 42,800 from 316,851 in 2011. In West Northants, the population was recorded as 425,700, increasing by more than 50,000 from 357,101 in 2011.

Northamptonshire was among the top 25 areas for population growth in terms of percentage. Tower Hamlets took the top spot with a huge increase of 22.1% to 310,300 residents.

The number of households, either one person living alone or a group of people sharing an address, also increased. North Northants recorded 148,900, an increase of 12.3%, while West Northants saw an increase of 11.3%, 172,600 households.

But, despite the population rise, Northamptonshire still remains a green and pleasant land. 309 people live per square kilometer of West Northants, with North Northants a little higher at 364 people per square kilometer.

The East Midlands as a whole saw a population increase of 7.7%, joint third with London. Women also continue to outnumber men, taking up 51% of the national population.

The census found that more people than ever were living in England and Wales. 59,597,300 people were recorded, more than 3.5 million more than in 2011, when it was 56,075,912.

The English region with the largest population increase was the East of England, which grew by around 8.3% or 488,000 more residents. The English region with the smallest increase was the North East, growing by 1.9% or around 50,000 people. In Wales, the population grew by 1.4% or 44,000 people.

In North Northamptonshire, the population size has increased by 13.5%, from around 316,900 in 2011 to 359,500 in 2021. This is higher than the overall increase for England (6.6%), where the population grew by nearly 3.5 million to 56,489,800.

Nearby areas like Peterborough and Milton Keynes have seen their populations increase by around 17.5% and 15.3%, respectively, while others such as South Kesteven saw an increase of 7.2% and Huntingdonshire saw smaller growth (6.7%).

Tower Hamlets saw the largest percentage growth in population in England, increasing 22.1% between 2011 and 2021. Dartford was second, increasing 20.0%.
