Each ride type has a different rider capacity, a different cost, and a different purpose.

The most common Uber services in most cities are UberX, XL, Comfort, Premier, and Black.

Read on to learn what each service is, how much they cost, and how to choose the right service for your needs.

The differences between Uber X, XL, Comfort, Share, Black, Premier, Green, and Select

• UberX seats 4 passengers. UberX cars are typically sedans such as Toyota Prius, Honda Accord
• UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV and minivan. XL costs more than UberX
• Uber Comfort seats 4 in a newer, larger vehicle with more legroom
• UberX Share is a shared ride with another Uber user
• Uber Black and Uber SUV is Uber’s luxury service. Commercially registered vehicles, typically a black SUV or luxury sedan. The most expensive Uber service
• Uber Premier and Premier SUV is a luxury ride, similar to Uber Black
• Uber Green is a ride in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. Includes a $1 fee
• Uber Select is Uber’s entry-level luxury service that seats up to 4 passengers

How to select between Uber ride types

Enter your destination in the Uber app to see the Uber ride types available to you.

Scroll through the ride types to see the services available in your area. Change your ride type by tapping the name of a service.

After you tap a different ride type, the button at the bottom of the screen will change to “Confirm *name of service*” So if your button says “Confirm UberXL,” you can be sure that you’re getting an XL.

Not all services listed on this page are available in every city. For example, some cities only offer UberX, while larger cities like Los Angeles offer 10+ different services.

How much does Uber cost?

It’s easy to find out how much your ride will cost before you request it.

Uber automatically shows you how much your ride will cost when you enter your destination.

The cost of an Uber ride is determined by the ride type, the distance, the time, market demand, and other fees such as tolls or airport surcharges.

The cost does not depend on the number of passengers. If you have more than one passenger, the cost of your ride will not increase.

If you ride with more than one passenger, you can choose to equally split the cost of the ride. There is a 25 cent fee for each rider who splits the ride.

Price differences between the Uber ride types

A significant factor in the cost of an Uber ride is the Uber service you choose.

Need room for more passengers, or want a more luxurious ride? Expect to pay more.

The price of the different ride types, from least expensive to most expensive:

UberX seats 4 passengers

UberX is the standard Uber service that seats up to 4 passengers. Of all the Uber ride types, only UberX Share is cheaper.

In most cities, UberX cars must be 15 years old or newer and pass a vehicle inspection that looks at basic safety features like brakes, tires, and overall condition.

UberX cars are typically sedans like Honda Accord, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Fusion, etc.

UberX drivers are not professional livery drivers and a commercial license is not required, although some UberX drivers might have one.

UberX drivers must be 21 or older and are required to pass a driving record check and a background check.

UberX Priority: Get a faster pickup

In some cities, you may see “UberX Priority” listed beneath UberX. UberX Priority gives your ride request priority over other customers. That means that you’ll get a faster pickup with lower wait times.

UberX Priority adds a surcharge of around $5, so you will have to pay extra for the convenience.

UberXL seats 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan

UberXL is for larger groups of 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan.

UberXL costs more than UberX. It’s a great option for airport trips, or any trip where you might need extra space for luggage or other items.

Typical UberXL vehicles are minivans and SUVs like Honda Pilot, Dodge Caravan, GMC Acadia, etc.

Uber XL is the right option for a large group of people who want the most affordable ride for 5 or more passengers.

Uber Comfort seats 4 passengers in a larger vehicle with more legroom

Uber Comfort vehicles have more headroom and legroom than the standard UberX vehicle.

Comfort is a good choice when you need more room for yourself and your luggage but you don’t need a full XL minivan or SUV.

Full-size sedans and SUVs qualify for Uber Comfort, and most markets also require Comfort vehicles to be newer models.

Uber Comfort Electric is a special edition of Comfort for electric cars. Comfort Electric costs a few dollars more than a regular Comfort ride.

UberX Share: Share your ride with another passenger, get a discount

UberX Share is a shared ride with another passenger that offers a discount on your ride.

Uber first offers an upfront discount when you choose UberX Share, then an additional 20% off if you are matched with another rider.

You will only be matched with other riders headed in a similar direction as you, but be warned that you may not be dropped off first.

Each rider group is limited to 1 person, so you and other riders can’t bring a friend along.

UberX Share is currently available in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Portland, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.

UberX Share offers 20% off if you get matched with another rider

Uber Black and Black SUV: Luxury vehicles, commercial drivers

Uber Black is Uber’s high-end service that only accepts late-model luxury SUVs and drivers with commercial registration.

The vehicle standards and driver standards are much higher for Uber Black: Your Black driver will have commercial registration and insurance. Their vehicle will be a late-model, high-end luxury sedan or SUV with a leather interior.

In some markets, there are two levels within the Black service: Black and SUV. Black is a luxury sedan that seats four, and if available, Black SUV is a luxury SUV that seats 5 or more.

Uber Black and SUV are the most expensive Uber ride types. They cater to Uber users willing to spend a little extra for a more professional experience.

Black and Black SUV Hourly

Some cities allow you to book an Uber Black or Black SUV by the hour. Hourly is a good option if you have several stops to make.

After you input your destination, the Hourly option will show a price estimate that lists the price per hour and the minimum number of hours you can book.

Uber Premier and Premier SUV: Luxury ride, replaces Uber Black in some cities

Uber Premier offers rides in a luxury vehicle or SUV. Some cities have Uber Black as their luxury ride type, while others have Uber Premier instead.

Premier vehicles must be 6 years old or newer, and drivers must maintain a high passenger rating.

Uber Premier and Premier SUV only accept luxury vehicle brands such as Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet Suburban, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes, Tesla, & Volvo.

Uber Green: A ride in a low-emissions vehicle

Uber Green guarantees that your trip will be in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. There is a $1 surcharge for Green rides. Half of the fee goes to drivers, and half goes to the Green Futures program, which will help drivers transition to lower-emissions vehicles in the future.

Think of Uber Green as UberX, but with a hybrid or electric car.

Uber Pet: A pet-friendly ride

Uber Pet will match you with a pet-friendly driver for only a few dollars more than an UberX.

Drivers have to opt into Uber Pet, so you won’t have to hope and guess that your driver will let you take a cat or dog.

Uber drivers are not required to take pets in their vehicles for other ride modes unless the animal is a service animal.

UberX Share: Share your ride with a stranger and get a discount

With UberX Share, you can share your Uber ride with another Uber user who is headed in a similar direction as you.

UberX Share is the cheapest Uber service. You get a small upfront discount for choosing X Share, then an additional 20% off if you end up being paired with another passenger.

Your driver may pick you up first, or they may pick up another passenger.

The same goes for drop-offs: The Uber app will tell your driver to drop off passengers according to the most efficient route.

It’s a great, cheap option if you don’t mind sharing your ride with a stranger.

Uber Select is a luxury ride for 4 passengers

Select is a premium service that seats 4 passengers in a luxury sedan.

To qualify for Select, drivers must have a newer luxury car from car brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Audi.

Uber Select costs more than UberX and XL. Select is a good option when you want a nicer car but don’t want to pay for the top-end Uber Black service.

Select is not available in all markets, so check your Uber passenger app to see if you can request a Select in your area.

Many other Uber services are only available in a few markets, such as UberTaxi, For Hire, T, Cab, Español, Wav, Assist, Rush, and Lux.

Uber Reserve: Schedule a ride in advance

A scheduling feature in the Uber app allows you to book a ride with a driver up to 30 days in advance.

To schedule a ride, tap the clock icon next to “Where To?” in the search bar. Next, pick the date, time, and pickup & drop-off location.

What type of Uber is best for trips to the airport?

It’s not always obvious what type of Uber you should get when you go to the airport because you may be traveling with a group of people and bulky luggage.

Generally speaking, an UberX should be ok if you have 2 people and a typical amount of luggage. But an UberXL is the better option if you have more than 2 people or lots of luggage.
